Tendai college of Buddhism goes back to the 8th century. It was started by a Chinese priest known as Jianzhen. In the primary days, the teachings promoted by Jianzhen were called the Ritsu college. But this didn't last for long as it didn't collect much approval. In 805, one Japanese friar, Saicho, brought countless Tiantai texts from China. He also made a church on Mt Hiei. The church served as a nexus of study n practice for Japanese Tendai.
